About the course

To ensure cleaner and greener shipping, IMO has adopted cap on Sulphur content of bunker fuel on board ships. In addition IMO has formulated mandatory means of measuring energy-efficiency, known as EEDI with the aim of reducing fuel consumption right at the design stage of ships. IMO has also established a series of baselines for the amount of fuel eachtype of ship burns for a certain cargo capacity. Through EEDI, the ships built in the future will have to beat that baseline by a set amount, which will get progressively tougher over time. The EEDI is therefore an estimated measure of transport efficiency of a ship, which currently under the design stage. As such it is important index for designers and builders of ships. IMO has devised a method of collection of data on consumption of bunker onships. Ship owners are required to report to flag administration, details of bunker consumption during one year period.
