Amendments to MARPOL Annex V with respect to garbage management enters into force on 1 January 2013. Ships of 100 gross tonnage and above, or certified to carry 15 persons or more, and fixed or floating platforms are required to have on board, by 1 January 2013, a new or revised Garbage Management Plan complying with resolution MEPC.201(62). Thus the requirements for carriage of garbage management plan has been reduced from 400 gross tonnage to 100 gross tonnage. The plans are not required to be approved by or on behalf of the Administration. Additionally, ships of 400 gross tonnage and above, or certified to carry 15 persons or more engaged in voyages to ports or offshore terminals under the jurisdiction of another party to MARPOL, and fixed or floating platforms, are also required to carry a Garbage Record Book.
