Technical advancements in digital technology, smart sensors, communication systems and state of art software systems are leading to design and development of vessels with advance autonomy. The maritime industry is seeing a rise in projects to demonstrate remote controlled and Autonomous vessels. International Maritime Organisation (IMO) while acknowledging the development of new technologies, issued guidelines on categorisation and testing/ trials of such vessels and parallelly initiated an exercise to identify existing Regulations which could become hindrance to such developments.
